CLINICAL USE
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is the first serological marker after infection with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), the causative agent of hepatitis. It is responsible for binding the virus to the liver cell.
Used to identify persons infected with HBV and to prevent transmission of the virus by blood and blood products. Also used as a part of the antenatal screening program to identify HBV infected mothers and to prevent perinatal HBV infection by subsequent immunization.
