24 Hour Urine Protein
CLINICAL USE
Increased in high cardiac output, exercise, acromegaly, infection and hypothyroidism.
Decreased in acute/chronic renal failure, shock, hemorrhage, dehydration, congestive heart failure and intake of nephrotoxic medications.

NOTES
24hr URINE COLLECTION FOR CREATININE CLEARANCE (NO PRESERVATIVE)
1. Empty patient’s bladder into the toilet when they get up in the morning. Record time and date on your container label. DO NOT INCLUDE this voided urine in your time collection.
2. For the remainder of the 24-hour period, collect all the patient’s voided urine and immediately add this to your sterile container.
3. The sample collection ends 24-hours from the first uncollected specimen the day before. Record the end time on the container label.
4. If you are unable to collect a urine sample at the time you are about to end your test DO NOT EXTEND the collection time.
5. Urine container must be kept refrigerated or stored in a cool place during the span of sample collection.
A single urine be discarded or not collected may lead to inaccurate or false reading of the sample. If urine sample is more than what the container could hold, use a second bottle.
Submit the 24-hour urine sample to the laboratory as soon as possible after the collection is completed.
Indicate present height and weight on the laboratory request form along with sample collection details for the computation needed in the test.
Blood extraction for “serum creatinine” is taken within the urine collection period.
